Symptoms of a Faulty Vehicle Mass Air Flow Sensor
A vehicle intake air flow meter does not always set a fault code immediately. On a turbo diesel or gasoline direct injection engine you may see long cranking, black smoke at full throttle, or fuel trims above plus 10 percent at idle. The engine may idle high for a few seconds then nearly stall.
Here is the thing. A dirty mass air flow sensor often under reports airflow. The engine control unit then cuts fuel. The mixture goes lean. The driver feels hesitation at 1800 to 2500 rpm. On some Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger models in Australia and Southeast Asia the issue appears after off road use because dust enters through a damaged air filter seal.
Diagnosing the Intake Air Flow Meter Before Cleaning
First check the air filter housing and intake boot for cracks. Any unmetered air after the MAF sensor causes false readings. Then read live data at hot idle. For a 2.5 liter diesel engine a nominal MAF reading may be 8 to 15 kg/h at idle and 60 to 100 kg/h at 3000 rpm under load. Different engines vary but a reading that stays flat while RPM rises points to a dead element.
Check the intake air temperature sensor reading too. Many mass air flow sensors include a negative temperature coefficient thermistor. If the scan tool shows intake air at minus 40 °C on a warm engine the sensor circuit is open. If it shows 120 °C on a cold engine the thermistor is shorted.

Step by Step MAF Sensor Cleaning Procedure
Switch off the engine and remove the key. Unplug the connector. Do not touch the pins with bare fingers. Remove the MAF sensor from the intake tube using the correct Torx or security Torx bit. In many Denso and Bosch units the screws have a five point tamper proof head.
Hold the sensor over a clean white cloth. Spray the sensing wires and the small thermistor bead with a dedicated MAF sensor cleaner. Spray for 3 to 5 seconds. Do not let the straw touch the wire. Let the solvent evaporate for 10 minutes before refitting. Do not use compressed air on a hot wire MAF sensor because this can break the wire.
Most engineers skip this part. After cleaning, clear the fuel trims and fault codes. Drive the vehicle at medium load for 10 minutes. Watch the short term fuel trims at idle and at 2500 rpm. If they move closer to zero the cleaning worked.
Cleaning the Wires Without Damaging the Sensing Element
The sensing element in a modern MAF sensor is either a platinum hot wire or a thin film resistor on a ceramic plate. The wire is about 0.2 mm thick on older Bosch units. Do not scrub the wire with a cotton bud. If a cotton fibre remains on the wire it burns and creates a false temperature reading.

When to Replace Instead of Clean
If the MAF sensor output is fixed at 0.0 kg/h with the engine running the internal circuit is broken. Cleaning will not fix a dead hot wire. If the housing is cracked or the connector has a bent pin replace the unit. In some Nissan and Mitsubishi applications the plastic housing warps after years of turbo heat, creating an air leak that mimics a bad sensor.
Do not replace the sensor just because a parts store code reader shows a MAF fault. Check the power supply, ground, and signal wire first. A missing 12 volt supply at the MAF connector can set the same fault. Use a multimeter with a duty cycle or frequency setting because many vehicle MAF sensors send a frequency signal, not an analog voltage.
