Why Straight Pipe Run Geometry Matters for Clamp On Ultrasonic Meters

Straight pipe run geometry decides whether a clamp on ultrasonic flow meter reads correctly or drifts. The sensors need clean flow. Swirl and turbulence from elbows, pumps and valves destroy the transit time measurement.


Clamp on ultrasonic meters send acoustic signals through the moving fluid. The signal travels faster with the flow and slower against it. If the velocity profile is not stable, the meter calculates the wrong average velocity. The converter is fine. The sensor location is usually the problem.


Recommended Straight Pipe Lengths for Common Pipe Fittings

For one 90 degree elbow or one tee, keep 10D upstream and 5D downstream. For two elbows in the same plane, use 10D to 15D upstream and 5D downstream. For two elbows in different planes, a partially open valve or a strainer, use 20D upstream and 5D downstream. For a pump discharge or a control valve, use 30D upstream and 10D downstream when space allows.


These are minimum values. More straight run is always better. A long straight spool piece often costs less than a flow meter service call.


How to Calculate D for Your Pipe

D is the internal diameter of the pipe. Do not use the outside diameter. For a DN100 schedule 40 steel pipe, D is roughly 102 mm. The upstream 10D requirement for one elbow becomes 1020 mm. For a DN200 line, 20D upstream is 4000 mm. Measure from the sensor mounting point back to the disturbance. Do not include reducers, expanders or flexible hoses in the straight run. Count only clean full bore pipe.


Sensor Position on the Pipe

On horizontal pipes, do not mount the transducers on the top or bottom. Solids settle at the bottom and gas collects at the top. Use the 3 and 9 positions when you look at the pipe end. The 10 and 2 positions also work for many liquids. The pipe must be completely full during measurement. A straight run cannot fix a half empty pipe.
